Nicholas (Nick) Atthey was born at Tantobie, Durham on 8th May 1946. He started as an Apprentice with Walsall, signing professional forms for them in July 1963. He made his debut in the 1963-64 season and went on to score seventeen goals in four hundred and thirty-nine League appearances, of which ten were as a substitute, before finishing his League career with the Saddlers in 1976-77. He then joined Non-League Telford United.
